Great Dramas!
Easy to stage – Hilarious – Educational!
Study Guides for continued learning!
First Christian Church has a
Drama Group that loves to perform and a pastor that loves to teach. Three
plays, The Congregation I, II, and III were all presented during Dinner
Theater Events staged over the last three years at First Christian DeSoto for
audiences that had a varied denominational background and attended many
different churches.
After watching the plays, individuals or the church group were offered study guides to plan their own educational event. The issues raised in the plays are easily studied during Sunday School or a special educational event. The plays lend themselves to Dinner Theater or just the performance. They may also be used at a breakfast gathering (a retreat, perhaps) followed by a discussion using the study guides.
The “Disciples Players”, the church’s drama group, presented these congregational life plays written by our pastor, Annette Meehan. All the characters are composites of various church members that Rev. Meehan has met in her work in church. The situations are present in all our churches regardless of denomination. These situations often cause all sorts of conflict and hinder congregations as they seek to make a nurturing and peaceful environment in their church. The purpose of these plays is to create space to ‘see’ the issues and gain insight.
Through humor the audience is asked to look at the issues that plague all congregations regardless of denomination or size as the players portray a congregation doing what congregations do…
Gathering in their sanctuary for worship
Congregation II
Each Act as a different committee meeting
The last being the Board Meeting
Congregation III
Dealing with an incident
Someone left a classroom a mess (always a fun set to create)
Watching the issues unfold in drama, the audience is offered the opportunity to detach from blame and consider what may have been a better choice of action for the various characters.
The sets are fun and easy to achieve. The lines are easily hidden in props for nervous thespians. The Study books have a Leader’s guide.
The studies are designed to provide a light hearted non judgmental way to raise the dilemma of how to bring up the behavior of a fellow church member without offering the solution. Finding the solution hidden in the dialogue is part of the fun. This allows for everyone to see very quickly that we do not agree easily on how to handle difficult situations. Later persons may share their ideas while going through the discussion questions. A group does not have to work on all the questions, of course. Pick and choose what suits your church environment. Actually some questions just restate the same issue in a different context. This allows the group leader the opportunity to select the best questions for his or her group.
Sample question from the Guidebook to The Congregation I:
The Congregation at Worship
In the play it is obvious that everyone has a different agenda during the gathering time before the Sunday Service. What do you believe is the work of the church during the time before the service? How flexible can you be to the needs of others before you are annoyed?
